Lawyers refuse to represent 12 conspirators

Mangalore, Apr 15: The 12 people who stand accused of conspiring to murder an advocate based in Mangalore as per the instructions of underworld don Yusuf Madoor, cannot find any advocate to represent them. The lawyers of Mangalore appear to have decided not to represent the accused because they allegedly planned to murder a lawyer. 

S P Chengappa, the president of the Mangalore Bar Association, informed media persons that the lawyers have taken this decision without any external influence. Some lawyers, begging to remain anonymous, informed media persons that they had been unofficially advised to stay away from the case. 

A senior lawyer expressed his opinion that the attitude of the lawyers reflected prejudice and hypocrisy. He said that everybody who is accused of a crime has the right to legal service and is to be considered innocent until proven guilty. The senior lawyer commented that the lawyers of Mangalore appear to have already decided that the accused are guilty. 

The family members of Muhammed Jamaluddin and Abhishek Ameen claim that they are innocent. Muhammed’s wife stated that the police arrested her husband on April 5 although the police claim that all the 12 were arrested on April 12. Asha Ameen, the mother of Abhishek, said that her son was arrested on April 1 and tortured by the police. 

Bharathi, the congress councillor, is offering moral support to the families of those accused. She has accused the police of behaving in a high-handed manager. She also claims that Muhammed and Abhishek have been framed and that they are actually innocent. She also wanted to know how the accused can present their case if no lawyer steps forward to represent them.
