Kissing video on Internet claims lives of girl, boyfriend

Kannur, Feb.20: In yet another suicide case involving sex, cell phones and internet, the bodies of a Class 12 girl student and her lover were found hanging at his residence at Taliparamba in Kannur district on Saturday morning.

It was only two weeks ago that the MMS of the girl and a boy in the class was widely circulated in cell phones and on the internet. A boy, caught by local people in this connection said he copied the file from an internet cafe. It now transpires that a kissing act of the duo was recorded by another student with a mobile phone camera who took the phone to the internet cafe for copying the file onto a CD. Even as the MMS went around cell phones, a video with morphing was also circulated on the net. The boy was later arrested following a complaint by the school’s Parent Teachers Association.

The 18-year-old girl and her boy friend, a 28-year-old plumber, apparently reached a suicide pact and executed it on the latter’s residential premises on Friday. The bodies of duo were found hanging from a tree. The girl was wearing a “mangalsutra” and a vermilion mark on her forehead, traditional symbols sported by married Hindu women, when the bodies were found. The police investigation into the case was still going on when the incident occurred.

There has been a spurt in cases involving cellphones, sex and internet in schools. In November 2008, three girls consumed pesticides to end their lives after they were blackmailed by some boys using cellphones. Several such incidents have also followed since then.

State Higher Secondary director Geetha said the ban on mobile phones was in force in schools. “However, we must remember that for children there is a space between the schools and home which we don’t have access to. Unless the people take the responsibility to protect our girls, these trends will keep recurring,’’ she added.
