Iron ore trucks banned on NH-17, 48: DC Ponnuraj

Mangalore, June 19: The movement of iron ore trucks on NH-17 and 48, including Shirady Ghat section will be banned from Sunday, June 20 to November 15 this year said Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj


In a release, Ponnuraj said that the bad state of road at Shiradi ghat in the monsoons will affect the vehicles movement. The bad condition of road will also create road accident in Ghat area.


He further added that, due to movement of overloaded trucks, there was a possibility that all types of vehicle movement may be affected in case the ore trucks are allowed to ply on the ghat section.


There is a movement of 22,000-23,000 passenger car units (PCU) in the ghat section, but according to Indian Road Congress, the two-lane ghat section capacity is only 10,000 PCUs.


Observing that the proposal to concretize the road has been with the ministry of highways, DC said that such closures were inevitable till a permanent solution in the form of concretization is implemented, release added.
