INA soldier, Freedom fighter U Sunder Rao passes away

sunder raoMangalore Feb 25: U Sunder Rao (87), a veteran Soldier of Indian National Army (INA) and senior freedom fighter, passed away on Thursday, February 25. After suffering from health condition, Rao, breathed his last at his daughters house at Balmatta. U Sunder Rao worked as a spy at Indian national Army, constituted by Subhaschandra Bhose.

 


Rao, a native of Beltahngady, moved to Bombay in 1941, after the completion of his high school studies at Beltahngady. He joined the British Indian Army as a combatant clerk. 

 


He was succeeded to get an overseas assignment in Malaya by the end of the year. Unfortunately, at the time of World War II, he became a prisoner of war along with 1.3 lakh allied troops in Malaya. But he eloped from there and planned to return to India.

 


He was a close friend of Subhaschandra Bhose, who constituted the INA. He worked there as spy. He was lieutenant to Subhaschandra, during Burma war. He took part in INA’s war against the British and also fought at Burma, Singapur, and Hong-Kong.  He wrote about this in his biography ‘Reminiscence of an INA soldier.

  

He is survived by three daughters.
