Mangalore, May 13, 2012: Hunger Project India has invited journalists to give their articles on women in the Panchayat Raj for the prestigious Sarojini Naidu Prize of 2012.

Making the above announcement at a press conference held at Vartha Bhavan in Mangalore, Justin, an associate of the Hunger Project Program, said that the aim of the award is to highlight the achievements of women in the Gram Panchayats.

Speaking about the award, he said that the Hunger Project launched it 11 years back. Last year, 1863 journalists from all over India had applied for it. The Hunger Project publishes the best reports in the form of books titled “Thus Spoke the Press.” The award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and a memento.

The winner of the Sarojini Naidu Award for 2009 said that journalists can write a lot about women in the Panchayat Raj because DK has 203 Gram Panchayats and Udupi has 65 Gram Panchayats.

Guruvappa Balepuni, who won the award in 2011, urged journalists to grab this opportunity so that they can highlight not only their talents, but also the Gram Panchayats.

The Hunger Project has set a deadline of June 15 for journalists to send their applications.
