Home Minister justifies power tariff hike

Home Minister Dr V S Acharya said that power tariffs have been hiked after a period of 6 years. He was responding to the opposition members’ criticism of the recent hike in power tariff. 

Dr. Acharya informed press people that the government had provided power by purchasing it from other states without implementing any tariff hike, even in the face of acute power shortage. He said that the total demand for power was 125 million units of which the state produced only 40 million units; therefore, the state has to purchase an additional 85 million units of power, which is very expensive, from other states.
