Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore March 21: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar promised that the agriculture in Karnataka will be free from genetically modified seeds at a seminar and workshop, “Coastal District Environment and Development Related Issues on Protection of Agriculture, Environment, and Culture of Tulunadu,” organized by Nagarika Seva Trust in collaboration with other like-minded organizations on March 21, Sunday.

Lauding the efforts of the Nagarika Seva Trust and other like-minded institutions that were focusing on creating environmental awareness among the public, the minister said that we are spoiling our environment because of our greed for money and for Westernization.

Referring to the issue of genetically modified seeds, he said that the government has no mechanism to test its effects, adding that the state doesn’t even have a proper water-testing unit if the water is contaminated.

Dr. Kishan Bhir Chaudari, the national president of the Indian Agriculturist’s Society, New Delhi, said that the new bill that opposed cross-pollinated seeds will be a great loss to Indian agriculture and urged the state government to ban genetically modified seeds.

Continuing his speech about genetically modified seeds, he said that the BT brinjal is a plot to enter the food chain of India. American scientists have already revealed that genetically modified food grains cause immunity deficiency, disturbed metabolism, problems in digestive system, and other medical problems, which the American population already suffers from, he informed.

Dr Madhava Bhandary, the president of City Development Authority, inaugurated the workshop. K Somanath Nayak, the president of the Nagarika Seva Trust, welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory address.
