shambu shettyUdupi, March 20: Freedom fighter Shabhu Shetty (92) passed away after a brief illness on March 20. He was survived by his wife, three daughters and a younger brother.


Shambu Shetty was born to Kudettor Magandadi Jarappa Shetty and Mulky Bappanaduguttu Appi Shedti on August 30, 1918. At the early age Shambu Shetty actively took part in freedom movement. His endless fight continued after independence also. He raised voice against upper class to eradicate untouchability.


Shambhu Shetty participated in a Satyagraha in 1941, for which he was sent to jail. He played an important role in organising the Quit India Movement at Mulki in Dakshina Kannada district in 1942.


Mr. Shetty was a Gandhian, a progressive farmer and a recipient of first prize for paddy cultivation in the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada.


He received a “Tamra Patra” each from the former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
