Flights cancelled/diverted owing to incessant rains

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 14:  The incessant rains in Mangalore have been affecting flights from the past three days. Only small aircraft from Bangalore are now landing at Mangalore International Airport. Flights operating on Delhi, Mumbai, and West Asia had to be either diverted or cancelled.

On Sunday, a Boeing 737-800 belonging to Air India landed at Mangalore International Airport. It was diverted to Cochin on Saturday morning because the ATC did not permit its landing. The aircraft flew the passengers to Mangalore on Sunday. AI Station Director Chellam Prasad informed journalists that the Doha-Bahrain-Mangalore flight has been cancelled and that special arrangements will be made to take the passengers on Monday.

An IC-7613 Delhi-Mangalore flight was also cancelled on Monday. The Kingfisher flight from Mumbai to Mangalore was diverted to Bangalore and two Jet Airways flights from Mumbai were cancelled.

The major reason for the diversion of several aircraft during the past 3 days is because the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Mangalore International Airport has not yet been repaired. It was damaged when the Dubai - Mangalore AI Boeing crashed.

Peter Abraham, the director of Mangalore Airport, informed Airports Authority of India (AAI) that a team of experts from New Delhi will arrive at Mangalore to check the instruments.
