Fired Wenlock workers stage indefinite strike

Mangalore, March 18: The security and cleaning personnel of Wenlock Hospital, who had been fired without notice, staged an indefinite strike on the premises of Wenlock Hospital demanding justice on March 17, Wednesday. 


Thirteen security guards and 35 cleanliness workers were told that their services were no longer required when they reported for duty on March 14, Sunday. No prior notice was issued to them. On the same day, the workers approached the district medical officer and the workers were assured that their jobs will be restored to them.


The security staff launched an indefinite strike under the auspices of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) after the hospital management failed to keep its promise. The DYFI submitted a memorandum to the commissioner of the labour department, urging the department’s quick intervention in the matter. The memorandum included demands for justice as well as strict steps to be taken against the previous contractors who had defrauded the workers by not paying them proper wages and other facilities. 


Reshma, the leader of the workers; Muneer Katipalla, the president of the DYFI district committee; Dayanand Shetty, the general secretary; Pramila, the leader of the Bunder Workers’ Union; Vishnumurthy; and others participated in the dharna.
