‘Revive Tulu language in Kundapur region’
Tulu Aisiri (R) has decided to host this felicitation function at Kundapur with the objective to giving a boost to the Tulu speaking community of this region. In the olden days, Tulu language was widely spoken in Kundapur region and the historical town of Barkur served as the capital city of Tulunadu. The Tulunadu region of those days spanned out from Chandragiri River at Kasargod to Sampaje bordering Kodagu, portions of Chickmagalur and Shimoga districts and up to Ankola / Gokarn in Uttara Kannada district. It is widely acknowledged that Tulu script, which is now not in popular use, was actually the precursor for Malayalam script. This itself bears witness to the widespread influence of Tulu in its golden age. Unfortunately, due to various historical factors, the number of Tulu speakers has declined rapidly over the last few centuries. Now only about 25% of the population speak Tulu in these regions and valuable Tulu culture is being lost.

“Through Tulu Aisiri (R), we have been striving very hard over the last three years to revive the old glory of Tulunadu by focusing attention on neglected Tuluva regions like Kundapur which is very much a part of Tulunadu cultural canvas. Through these methods, we hope to make a positive contribution in the future,” says the Founder and President of Tulu Aisiri (R), Dr. K. Mohandas Bhandary.

“I also urge that Tulu Sahitya Academy should henceforth appoint at least one member from Kundapur region so that this forgotten portion of Tulunadu will get due attention in the future,” he adds.
