Mangalore, Feb 17: Chairman of Backward Classes C S Dwaraknath interacted with fishermen, members of the backward communities, and students in backward class hostels on Feb 17, Wednesday. He has arrived in Mangalore with the sole purpose of listening to the grievances of the backward communities.

DWARAKANATH

He visited the Urwa Store fish market to learn about the various problems faced by the fisherwomen. He heard complaints of poor infrastructure and lack of adequate cleaning facilities, which created innumerable health hazards. Majority of the fisherwomen complained about the highhandedness of the Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation, which was trying to rob them of their livelihood by selling fish in modern air-conditioned outlets in utter disregard for the traditional fish market.

Dwaraknath met the fishermen and toddy tappers at Sasihttlu. The toddy tappers requested him to help them gain more government benefits and recognition for their traditional profession. Speaking about the virtues of traditionally prepared jaggery, the toddy tappers said that it had medicinal values. The product must therefore be promoted by the government and the toddy tappers must be encouraged, they said. Also, the weaver community requested a pension service.

He interacted with students in hostels for members of the backward communities and in rural areas of Dakshina Kannada. The members of the Kudubi community at Swamilapadav near Permude requested to be added to the scheduled tribe category. Claiming that they were equal to the scheduled tribes, they said that they were not receiving adequate benefits from the government.

Mr. Dwaraknath also held meetings with the leaders of fishermen, backward communities, and Ahinda. He will be in Dakshina Kannada for 4 days, and during this time, he intends to meet officers related to all departments that come under the Backward Classes Commission.

At a press meet, Dwaraknath informed media people that he will bring the problems of the backward communities to the notice of the government. B S Guruswamy, M S Helavar, Mahantesh D Pateel, M S Hatthigatti, and Yogananda Kumar, the members of the Backward Classes Commission, were present.
