DCC favors Women’s Reservation Bill: Ivan D’Souza

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, March 11: Ivan D’Souza, the spokesperson and vice president of the District Congress Committee, addressed media persons on March 10, Wednesday. Welcoming the passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha, he urged the cooperation of all in this regard. He congratulated Mr. M Veerappa Moily, the union law minister, for this development and sought the co-operation of the Lok Sabha.

He informed that the passing of the bill in the Rajya Sabha would reserve 33 percent of the Parliament and State Assembly seats for women. Formerly known as the 108th constitutional amendment, the bill now remains to be passed in the Lok Sabha.

Commenting on the budget, Mr. D’Souza said that it “lacked political will” and wondered about the activities of the Coastal Development Authority during the past two years. He pointed out that none of the projects proposed for Mangalore such as the ropeway, the skybus, or the backwater tourism has been implemented. He also informed that the MCC has received only Rs 40 crore of the total Rs 100 crore allotted by the state government. For this reason, all development work has come to halt. He also expressed his concern over the lack of footpaths beside the concretized roads.

Warning against launching protests against the government’s SAS and CDP programmes, Mr. D’Souza said that the CDP was only in favor of builders.

Mr. D’Souza also expressed his condolences regarding the death of prominent Konkani musician, Wilfy Rebimbus, who is widely acclaimed as the Konkani Nightingale.
