Citizens complain of harrassment

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 7: A janaspandana was organized for Mangalore hobli on Saturday, during which a participant complained that certain anti-social elements, who were managing a gas agency in Alake, were threatening and assaulting customers. The complainant said that the Food and Civil Supplies Department had continued to ignore complaints submitted about the same. Officials of the department, however, denied receiving any complaint.

However, the official in question was surprised when Aziz Kudroli, a city corporation councillor, claimed that he too had submitted a written complaint against the gas agency in question, adding that the complaint contained names and addresses of people who had been harassed by the gas agency. He warned the officials that he would take strict action against them if they did not initiate an inquiry and take stern action against the offenders at the earliest possible.

Upendra Kamath, a retired bank manager in Kankanady, said that he was harassed by the health officials of the MCC under the directions of his neighbor, who is a retired health officer. Mr. Kamath further complained that, since his neighbor still has great influence in the MCC, he is instructing the officials to harass him on the basis of false complaints. He alleged that the officials visit his house in his absence to conduct enquiries and harass his wife.

Hanumantha Kamath of the Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi complained that the MCC’s garbage collection mechanism is no longer functioning. Pointing out the fact that garbage has to be collected on a daily basis, he complained that this was hardly done. He added that, in several areas, pura karmikas were instructed to burn the garbage to save transportation costs.

A councillor from Jeppinamogaru complained that the Mine and Geology Department officials were harassing some people who were legally extracting sand from the River Nethravathi. He informed that media reports have given the wrong impression that everybody involved in the sand business were part of the sand mafia. He informed that most of the people involved in the sand business were poor people, suggesting that authorities must block all exit routes if they were worried about the illegal transportation of sand to Kerala and stop bothering people who were legally involved in the business.
