Christians observe Ash Wednesday

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Feb 17: The Christian community of Mangalore observed Ash Wednesday on Feb 17, Wednesday. They participated in the Holy Mass in their respective parishes.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, a period of 40 days during which Christians fast and do penance. The priest makes a cross mark with ashes on the foreheads of Christians during Holy Mass on this day. The Lenten season concludes on Good Friday, April 2.

During the Lenten season, Christians perform the Way of the Cross to rejuvenate their spiritual life. This ritual gives them an opportunity to think over the incidents of the past and prepares them for better living. The Lenten season also presents an opportunity to offer prayers, fast, do penance, and prepare for the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus, popularly known as Easter on April 4, Sunday.
