Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 20: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Committee to Struggle for the Implementation of 23% Integrated Project organized a one-day workshop for members of the Koraga community on June 20, Sunday with the purpose of creating awareness about various government schemes and Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) projects for their welfare. More than 100 Koragas participated in this workshop.

CPI (M) leader Krishnappa Konchady urged the Koraga community to get rid of their inferiority complex and grab various opportunities available to them in the form of government schemes. Stressing on the need to implement ITDP, he said that the Koraga community, which faces oppression and social boycott, stands in danger of total extermination from society if necessary steps are not taken to protect their basic rights.

Speaking about the Koraga community, Konchady said that they are an ancient community; in fact, they are the original inhabitants of DK, who have now become the most backward community in the district owing to social oppression. Their social and economic situation has worsened because of inequality, lack of education, social injustice, and negligence on the part of various governments, he said.

The social status of the community can improve only if opportunities are provided for the Koragas to progress and prosper, he said and urged the community to realize the importance of education and send their children to school.

Chairman of the Committee to Struggle for the Implementation of 23% Integrated Project Sanjeeva Boloor presided over this programme, which was inaugurated by Vasudeva Uchil. Lingappa Nantur, Sarojamma Mullakadu, Jayakumar Kodikal, Lalithamma Kodikal, Yamuna Pachchanady, Narayan Ullal, and many other leaders were also present.
