Mangalore. June 14:  A group of unidentified burglars uprooted the ATM installed at the NRI Branch State Bank of India at Kinnimulky in Udupi, which had Rs 14 lakhs in it, and carried it off late on the night of Saturday.

The police say that the burglars entered the ATM room through the front door, cut the power supply, and carried away the machine, which weights a total of 650kgs. Police feel that a group of at least 10 people with a large van must have pulled off the job.

The SBI Manager of the Udupi - Mangalore zone Mr. Kishore Kumar said that the ATM and the NRI branch was launched just a week back and that the security system was not yet installed.

Since the ATM machine was located in a residential area, it was not guarded. Mr. Kumar said that the security company had not yet installed the surveillance camera system and burglar alarm that the bank had ordered.

The last amount withdrawn from the ATM was Rs 2,000. The theft was discovered in the morning. The bank officials immediately lodged a complaint and senior police officials rushed to the spot with sniffer dogs and finger print experts. Currently, the burglary is being investigated.
