Bishop Emeritus of Belgaum Ignatius Lobo Dies

Belgaum, Feb.18:  Most Rev. Ignatius Lobo, Bishop Emeritus of Belgaum, passed away at 6.45 a.m. Wednesday, 17 February, at Lourdes Hospital, Dharwad.



Bishop Lobo was born in 1919, was ordained a priest in 1947 and was consecrated bishop in 1968. The funeral will be held in the Fatima Cathedral, Belgaum at 10.00 a.m. on Friday, 19th February 2010.

 


Rev. Ignatius Lobo was ordained to the priesthood for the diocese of Mumbai on December 1947 at Gloria church. He served as director of Catholic Charities (CARITAS) India, for 15 years from 1962. He nominated as director general of Caritas India, New Delhi, in 1974. He was a member of an executive council of Caritas Internationals and was the vice-president of an international organization representing Asia and Oceania for eight year from 1970. He was also a member of the senate of Karnataka University for four years from 1983.


As a sign of mourning, all Catholic schools coming under the diocese of Belgaum will remain closed on Friday, the day of funeral. Archbishop Rev Bernard Moras of Bangalore, archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and bishops from Karnataka, Maharashtra and other parts of the country including large number of priests and nuns will take part at the funeral process, bishop Rev Peter Machado, Belgaum diocese said in release.
