Mangalore, Nov 3: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), which had announced in February that it would introduce 3G services in Udupi, Manipal, and Mangalore by the end of 2009, has recently announced that the 3G services would be available by the end of January 2010, given that no unforeseen obstacles arise.

Owners of 3G handsets who purchase BSNL’s 3G services will be able to access hi-speed Internet on their handsets. The service includes attractive features such as video-conferencing and video-gaming. To avail of this service, customers will have to change their SIM cards.

Mr. Y C Mishra, the principal general manager of DK Telecom district said that the aim of BSNL was to provide 40,000 3G lines. Each line would cost anywhere between Rs 6000 and Rs 8000. The tariff will be announced later. Mr. Mishra informed press people that BSNL is offering broadband in all its exchanges in the DK Telecom district.

Mr. Mishra also said that the BSNL network coverage would improve by March 2010 because the company has activated around 280 towers and would set up 100 more by March 2010.

He also informed that BSNL will soon have 460 towers, enabling better network coverage along national highways, tourist centers, railway lines, and other significant areas.
