Academy confers honorary awards on 3 eminent Beary personalities

Mangalore, Mar 20: The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy announced that Ahmed Noori, the veteran writer; Abul Hasan Mohammed Maulavi, the multi linguistic scholar; and Ismail Ustad Suribail, teacher of “Daff,” a form of Beary folk art, have been selected for its honorary awards of 2009. 

Chairman of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy M B Abdul Rahiman made this announcement at a press conference organized on March 19, Friday. He even gave a brief introduction of the award winners. 

Ahmed Noori of Bangalore has been writing and singing Beary songs for the past 50 years, some of which enjoy great popularity among the Beary population. Noori has also written books such as “Maikala” and “Hijari Samsmsarana Sanchike” in Kannada. He has translated the Holy Quran into Kannada. He has also worked as a journalist with several newspapers. 

Abul Hasan Maulavi is widely acclaimed for his religious programmes (Matha Prasanga) in Beary. His collection of “Hadees” on Beary language “Muttumale” and several Kannada translations from Urdu and Arabic are highly popular. 

Ismail Ustad Suribail has been a teacher of “Daff,” a form of Beary folk art for many years. A resident of Suribail in Bantwal, he has strived to keep “Daff” alive and has more than 900 students from the Beary community. 

The awards will be presented on March 31, Wednesday, during a programme at Town Hall. Each honorary award comprises Rs 10,000, a memento, and a citation. 

B M Ichlangod, Secretary of the Kannada Cultural Department Mangala V Naik, Hamza Malar, and Registrar of the Academy Chandrahas Rai B also participated in the press conference.
