’Rasta roko’ for basic amenities in Mahakalipadpu, Manguluru

Mangaluru, Oct 2, 2015 : The Tulunadu Rakshana Vedike staged a ’rasta roko’ demanding that the district administration set right the problems arising due to the Jeppu - Mahakalipadpu manned rail crossing and the potholes on the road leading to Jeppu through  the National Highway 66.

Yogish Shetty Jeppu, founder and president of the Vedike, said the road from Jeppu-Mahakalipadpu to Bolar road offered the shortest distance to people arriving from Kerala and Mudipu. This road is riddled with potholes and in a very bad condition for long, making it difficult for both commuters as well as local residents to go about their daily business. He urged DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim to direct authorities concerned to repair the road immediately.

The other demand is for a road under bridge. Yogish said as many as 48 trains pass by that route and the gates are closed for 15 minutes each. This is causing a lot of inconvenience to road users, especially students, office-goers and ambulances, he said. He added that the city corporation and railway should  together, get the under pass at the earliest. He said another problem was the movement of fish laden trucks in that area which spills the oily  water with a foul smell on to the roads. This is worse when the railway gate is closed as the ice water mixed with fish oil forms puddles on the road, resulting in stench and the slippery road also poses danger. The officials should ensure that the fish transport trucks make adequate arrangements so that the excess water from the trucks is properly stored and drained at a proper disposal point.

Another demand was for making provision for underground drainage in Mahakalipadpu and Shetty Bottu areas, where sewerage flows beside the residential premises, and sometimes gets into houses during monsoon. He also said that the civic workers’ quarters at Mahakalipadpu were in a dilapidated state and needs attention immediately to prevent any mishap.
