"World Art Day" April 15, celebration in jail

Udupi, April 15, 2015 : The Artists’ Forum will organise World Art Day celebrations at the District Central Jail at Anjar near Hiriyadka in Udupi district on April 15.

Addressing media, Sampat Kumar Pangala, secretary of the forum, said that the forum had held several exhibitions, workshops and art camps during the last 22 years of its existence. It had now decided to hold an art exhibition at the jail to mark World Art Day.  Sachin Jaltare, artist from Hyderabad, would give a demonstration on art and painting to jail inmates.  Jaltare and 20 other artists work  would be exhibited at the jail.

Items of terracotta and masks and so on would be displayed during the event. The celebrations and the exhibition would be held at the jail from 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.  Pangala said that art attracted everyone from children,  senior citizens,  illiterates and intellectuals. Art had an important place in peoples lives .

It was also a medium for expression of emotions. Besides, entertaining people, art also helped in shaping the character of an individual. It can have deep impact on the minds of people and helps them lead better lives, he added.  Exposing the inmates of the jail to art will have a positive impact on their minds. Besides, it will also be a welcome diversion for them. There are about 90 inmates in the jail at present.

Purshotham Adve, president of the forum, said that forum artistes would also teach some aspects of art to the inmates like products from paper and terracotta. They too will be able to make them and this will benefit them in the long run.   P.V. Bhandary, psychiatrist, will inaugurate the celebrations. Sowmya G., Superintendent  of District Jail, and Ramesh Rao, senior artist, will also be take part in the inaugural function.
