Rare currency notes displayed

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 14:  Very few people turned up for the display of rare international currencies put up by the Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association at the Head Post Office here on Sunday owing to rain.

The collection, which belonged to the association’s member, Vidya Baglodi, included a quarter rupee note issued by the Japanese Government to Indian mercenaries in Burma (now Myanmar), who fought for them during the World War II.

The collection included an Iraqi Dinar printed on plain paper, as opposed to security paper. “These notes were printed by Saddam Hussein during the second Gulf War as he could not import special security paper,” said Ms. Baglodi’s husband Kishore Baglodi. The conducts meetings of its members at the Head Post Office on the second Sunday of every month.
