Mangaluru, Aug 29, 2018: Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Recycling Construction and Demolition Waste for Mangaluru’, organised by the district administration and Nirmithi Kendra at Hotel Ocean Pearl on August 28,  Tuesday; DK DC  Sasikanth Senthil said more awareness needs to be created on the utilisation of construction waste.

 

 

The deputy commissioner said it is the need of the hour to achieve reduction in waste generation by reusing construction and demolition waste. Construction waste should be managed efficiently, he said.

“Application of technology has become inevitable in waste management. But it is more important that this technology reaches the doorsteps of the people. Awareness has to be created on these lines,” he said.

The Nirmithi Kendra should make waste recycling technology accessible to the people, who have been playing a vital role in the implementation of government schemes. In a district like Dakshina Kannada, where the most of the people are well educated, people’s participation should be ensured in waste management. The Nirmithi Kendra has been set up with a motto of providing new technology in the construction sector, he added.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr M R Ravi, who was the chief guest on the occasion, saw a need to adopt a people-friendly technology in waste management. “Waste management has become a challenging task in rural areas as well,” he said.

Government of India Department of Science and Technology Fly Ash Research and Management (C-FARM) former director Dr Vimal Kumar, NITK Department of Civil Engineering Professor Katta Vekataramana and Nirmithi Kendra Director Rajendra Kalbavi were present.
