Mangaluru, June 22,2017: Reports pour in from all quarters of the city of hundreds of yoga enthusiasts taking part in the International Yoga Day programme organised. At the Town Hall mini auditorium on  June 21, Wednesday; the district administration, in association with the Department of Ayush had organised the programme.

Yoga guru Gopalakrishna Delampady demonstrated various asanas, and was followed appropriately by the elected representatives and senior officials alike, during the session that lasted an hour.

The session began with ’thadasana’, warm ups with neck forward, neck back, neck hanging and sideward and rotation movements, shoulders movement, trunk and knee movement. The asanas performed were ’thadasana’, ’vrikshasana’, ’padahastasana’, ’ardhachakrasana’, ’trikonasana’, ’baddhakonasana’, ’vajrasana’, ’shashankasana’, ’ardha ushtraasana’, ’vajrasana’, ’bhujangasana’, ’shalabhaasana’, ’makaraasana’, ’setubandha sarvaangasana’, ’pawanamukthasana’, ’shavaasana’, ’kapalabhati’, ’nadishuddhi pranayama’, ’bhramari pranayama’ and ’padmasana’.

The yoga session was followed by a round of meditation led by Vishweshwari, Mangaluru branch head of Brahmakumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya.

DK DC Dr K G Jagadeesha led the battery of officials that included Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumara, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr M R Ravi, District Health Officer Dr H N Ramakrishna Rao, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Sundar Poojary and DCP (Law and order) K M Shantharaju.

Mayor Kavita Sanil, Zilla Panchayat vice president Kasturi Panja, Taluk Panchayat president Mohammed Monu, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Kannada Sahitya Parishat district unit president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura among others also took part in the sessions.

Owing to paucity of space at the mini auditorium, yoga enthusiasts also performed asanas at the corridor of the Town Hall.

In his address, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel attributed the popularity of yoga in the recent days to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts. All India Radio (AIR) covered the event live, dedicating an hour-long slot for the same.

Institutions in city observe Yoga Day:

Several institution in and around the city conducted Yoga sessions a few of them are highlighted for knwoledge :

 Yoga Club  : Inaugurated at Vikas PU College on Wednesday, on the occasion of the International Yoga Day. Inaugurating the club, Yoga Guru Gopalakrishna Delampady said that yoga is for the concentration and stability of mind and that the practice of yoga relieves one from stress.

Various ’asanas’ and ’mudras’ were demonstrated by Delampady on the occasion. In addition, Sanskrit lecturer Laxmeesh Bhat delivered a talk on the importance of performing yoga.

Principal Prof T Rajaram Rao, Vikas Education Trust J Koragappa, Advisor Dr G Ananth Prabhu and lecturer Ajith Rai were present.

Marine Engg College : "Yoga demonstrates the close links between physical exercise, mental equilibrium and the ability to enjoy life," said Nagaraj Thallanje. He was addressing the participants of Yoga demonstration held at Mangalore Marine College, Kuppepadavu, on the occasion of World Yoga Day.

All the staff and students of Mangalore Marine College and Technology were present for the programme and performed various yogic exercises. This event is celebrated to create the awareness of the wholesome effects of yoga among the public all over the world.

Vivek PU College :  International Yoga Day was observed at Vivek P U College. The Principal Jagadish Navada inaugurated the yoga camp and said that people in all parts of the world are practising yoga for peace of mind and good health. It is highly recommended for students to perform yoga. Teachers Venkatesh Udupa, Ganesh Shetty and NCC Officer Ganesh Navada were present.

Narayanaguru School : Samskrithi Bharati Seva Activist Vasudeva Acharya inaugurated the Yoga Day at Sri Narayanaguru English Medium School in Padubelle. Students performed yoga on the occasion. Head-teacher Jinaraj C Salian, teacher Veena Naik and Physical Education teacher Ashwini were present.

KV Panambur
: Third International Yoga Day was observed at Kendriya Vidyalaya Panambur on Wednesday. Common Yoga protocol exercises and meditation programme were conducted. Vinita Da Gama Rose, Principal Incharge presided over the function. Umanath K, Yoga Teacher coordinated the programme.

Coast Guard : Indian Coast Guard at Karnataka celebrated International Yoga Day at its state headquarters at Panambur. Yoga Day was attended by all the Coast Guard officers and personnel who are posted at Headquarters, ships, hovercraft and Air Enclave. The event was led by Deputy Inspector General S S Dasila, the Commander, Coast Guard Karnataka. Various Yoga asanas were performed by the participants.

DIG SS Dasila said,"Yoga is not merely an exercise but a way to attain peace through physical and mental well-being. It synchronises the mind, body and intellect. Being a symbol of universal aspiration, Yoga assures wellness for everybody."

Nitte  : NMAMIT in association with NSS Unit celebrated International Day of Yoga at the Institute.

Dr Niranjan N Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAMIT spoke on the importance of Yoga on our health. Trained Yoga Instructors of the Institute have commenced the training classes to the staffs and students and they were requested to make full use of their expertise.

MRPL : International day of Yoga was celebrated in MRPL. A Yoga session was held in the morning at MRPL Employees Club under the guidance of Yoga Teachers from Mangalore University. A separate Yoga session was held for CISF personnel from CISF Unit MRPL and family members of MRPL employees.

Forum Mall : many regulars to the mall were signed up days in advance, for the Yoga demo held on June 21 evening - it was a surprise to see that all types of  people attended in good number. The session was conducted by Isha Foundation for the promotion of Yoga. The 90 minute coaching interspersed with talks and power point not only brought awareness but motivation and knowledge. There was consensus that more sessions should be conducted.

Airport : Mangaluru International Airport celebrated the International Day. The Yoga session was organised by Kalayanmayee, Airports Authority of India Women Welfare Association in the Community Hall, MI Residential Colony, Old Airport. The Yoga session was followed by the prayer song and thereafter Airport Director V V Rao inaugurated the celebrations. The yoga concluded by reciting the’Yoga Mantra.’
