Mangalore, July 26: The DK district administration, the DK Zilla Panchayat, and the District Health and Family Welfare Department jointly observed World Population Day by organizing a programme titled Small Family Overall Development at Regional Advanced Pediatric Care Centre (RAPCC) at Wenlock Hospital today.

Speaking about the rapid growth of population in Indian, Dr. O. R. Srirangappa, the district health and family welfare officer said that the country’s population has risen from 36 crore in 1951 to 121 crore in 2011. He predicted that, if this state of affairs continues, India’s population will rise to 800 crore in 2025 and about 8 crore within Karnataka. 


Providing information regarding World Population Day, DC Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda said that every year July 11 was observed as World Population Day to spread awareness on population growth. The day was declared World Population Day after the population of the world touched 5 billion on July 11 in 1987. 


Expressing concern regarding the uncontrolled growth of population in India, he said that the population must decline for overall development in education, agriculture, health, environment, and urbanization. 


K. T. Shailaja Bhat, the president of the DK Zilla Panchayat, presided. MLA U. T. Khader, Dr. Sangameshwar, the district medical officer, and many others were present on the occasion.
