Mangaluru, April 18, 2016: The revamped physiotherapy centre will be inaugurated at the Government Wenlock Hospital here on April 19, Tuesday.The centre will also house the District Early Intervention Centre and also the proposed District Disability and Rehabilitation Centre. The physiotherapy centre was functioning behind the main building of the hospital since 1958. This centre was functioning along with the artificial limb centre.

 A few months ago, the Rotary Club came forward to provide equipment to meet the requirement of today’s physiotherapy needs but expressed the need to have the building renovated.  Superintendent of the hospital H.S. Rajeshwaridevi said the hospital’s Aarogya Raksha Samiti sanctioned Rs. 30 lakh to the Nirmiti Kendra for renovation. The renovation was done in consultation with  private architectural consultants specialising in hospital designs. Rotary Club has installed equipment worth Rs. 25 lakh.

Dr. Rajeshwaridevi announced that the District Early Intervention Centre will be moving from the Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre to the block housing the renovated physiotherapy centre.  The District Early Intervention Centre has been involved in identifying and treating hearing, visual and other defects in children aged up to 16.

Senior paediatrician U.V. Shenoy, who is the nodal officer of DEIC, said that they have attended on 682 children since April 2015. Also coming to this new block will be the District Disability and Rehabilitation Centre proposed by the Social Welfare Department. This rehabilitation centre will be operated by Lions Club that is running Limbs Centre.

Dr. Rajeshwaridevi said that the facilities available at the reorganised physiotherapy centre will be of great use to the DEIC and the Rehabilitation Centre. Post-operative physiotherapy sessions for patients can be done in an effective manner at the  new centre.
