Mangaluru, May 07, 2018: In the city, Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan’s 29 th Shramadan was organized in and around Hampankatta. Sri K Vithaldas Prabhu and Sri Dayananda Kankanadi jointly flagged off the drive in front of Milagres Church. Umakanth Suvarna, Dinesh Shetty, Kamalaksha Pai, Mohan Bhat and several others were present on the occasion.
Shramadan: After launch volunteers were divided into four groups. Souraj Mangalore and a group of volunteers cleaned the road dividers in Hampankatta circle and surrounding area. Dr Rakesh Krishna guided about 30 students of Nitte College of Physiotherapy who cleaned both sides of the Milagres Attavara Road off the dirt and garbage. Chethana, Ravi K R, Satish and others removed the posters stuck to the bus stand walls near Milagres and cleaned the entire spot. Mohammad Shameem and other volunteers took up the cleanliness work in front of Islamic Trust Complex. They also removed nearly half load of rubble lying on the footpath and helped the pedestrians in easy movement. They also removed the illegally put up banners, boards flex.
Civil repair work: In the past weeks a blackspot littered by the public was cleaned on the V T Road and was decorated with flower pots. Today it was given a face lift by civil repair work by using stones and plastering. Mukesh Alva coordinated the work. Clearing 3 tipper loads of garbage: Several black spots in the city prone to littering by public have been identified by the volunteers and they have been cleaned and beautified by the volunteers of the Abhiyan. Another such spot in a corner on the Milagres Attavara Road beside I M A building was identified. Several loads of garbage and construction debris were lying in this spot since many years. So Dilraj Alva, Mohammad Nazir and other volunteers using JCB cleared nearly 3 tippers of garbage from the spot.
Cleaning the railings: Nearly 200 feet long railing with boards from Hampankatta to Light House Hill Road were thoroughly cleaned by the volunteers who also removed illegal advertisements and posters stuck on the railings. Anand Adyar, Shishir Amin, Vikhyath Ullal and other volunteers painted them giving them a new silvery look.
Awareness Campaign: Members of Nivedita Balaga and students on Nitte College of Physiotherapy along with Himmat Singh visited several households, shops in Milagres Church, Hampankatta surrounding areas and distributed the awareness handbills and urged them to keep the area clean. Ashok Subbaiah, Umar Farookh, Yogish Kayarthdaka and many other volunteers actively participated in the Abhiyan. All the volunteers were provided with tiffin after the Abhiyan. MRPL Nitte Institutions are sponsoring the drive.
