Bantwal, April 27, 2014: A total of six persons including a Municipal Councillor of Bantwal have been booked in connection with the vandalism at Brahmarakootlu Toll Plaza on April 26, Saturday. The accused councillor is Mohammad Sharief.
As per the complaint, as many as 25 men including Sharief, Azeez, Sameer, Salam and Pallam Adam had come by three autorickshaws, two cars and ten bikes to vandalise the toll booths incurring a loss to the tune of nearly Rs 10 lakhs.
According to sources, it all began when Sharief objected to a toll booth staff who was collecting toll from an acquaintance. The computers, CC Cameras, chairs etc in the toll plaza were destroyed and the toll plaza manager Shiva and other staff namely Nizam, Satyaraj, Ranjith and Satyam Jadav were assaulted. Sources said Satyam was also robbed off his gold chain and cell phone.
According to the toll booth manager Shivakumar a cash of Rs one lakh from the cash drawer has also been robbed by the assailants.
The entire happening has been recorded in CCTV and the footages are said to be intact despite damage to the equipment.
Harsha Melanta, son of the toll plaza contractor Gopalkrishna Melanta who spoke to reporters said no additional security has been provided to the Toll plaza despite a letter by Union Minister for Surface Transport Oscar Fernandes in this regard.
