Mangalore, April 8, 2014: The vendors at Urwa fish market hasissued an ultimaturn of 10 days to the Mangalore city corporation to provide basic facilities in the market.The sellers have threatened to hold hunger strike and also hinted at boy-cotting the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls if the demands are not met.

The frustrated fish vendors staged a protest against the MCC with the support of Akhila Bharatha Hindu Yuvaka Sabha, Nagarika Hita Rakshana Samiti and BJP Mahila Morcha, at the premises of the market, on Monday.

Explaining the pathetic condition of the market which has a history of several decades, Devika Baikampady, on the vendor said ‘’the market leaks during rainy season. There is no storm water drains for the easy flow of rain water .No customer enter the market during monsoon. There is no toilet facility in the market. Male vendor attend nature’s call in the open. What about women vendors? She asked.
 
There are 50 fish vendors in the market. The market do not have electricity and drinking water facility. There is nothing like cleaning or waste management in the market. “We had submitted several petitions to the MCC to set right the problem. All our efforts went in vain. We had raised Rs 20, 00 for the maintenance of the market, Fish market in Surathkal, Padubidri, Kinnigoli, Haleyangadi and Katpady have been upgraded ,but Urva Market is left behind We pay tax to the MCC . However, the MCC is following step motherly attitude”.

Resident Shekar Shetty said MLA J R Lobo who had visited the market recently had promised of supplying water, and fan. However, the promises have remained only on paper. “We had opposed his idea of shifting the market. We had invited MP Nalin Kumar Kateel to visit the market. However, he never turned his eye to the market.”


Mannagudda Corporator Jayanthi Achar visited the protesters. However, she had to face the wrath of the protesters. BJP leader Asha Jagadish, Akila Bharatha Hindu Yuvaka Sabha State president Shravan Kumar Raikar, General Secretary LK Suvarna, District president Rajesh Poojary and others were present.
