Unsegregated garbage will be refused from Nov 11: Mayor

Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2017: City Mayor Kavitha Sanil said that the Mangaluru City Corporation will stop collecting garbage from households if people fail to segregate waste at source before handing it over to the civic workers.  This rule with come into effect from November 11, Saturday.

Briefing media the mayor said that civic workers have been instructed not to collect unsegregated garbage from November 11.  "People have to segregate wet and dry waste before handing them over to the workers and without tying up the plastic garbage bags," Sanil said.

Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that Mangaluru city is among 277 urban local bodies identified in the State for Swacch Sarvekshana Survey 2018.

For the local body to perform well in the survey, people will have to segregate waste at source. Kitchen waste, non-vegetarian waste, tissue paper, plantain leaves should not be mixed with plastic covers, milk packets, rubber, metals and other un-degradable materials.

Mangaluru had won 63rd position during Swacch Sarvekshana Survey 2017. About 4,000 marks have been allotted for the survey. Of which, 1,400 marks for the documents submitted by the urbal local body, 1,400 marks for public opinion, and 1,200 marks for survey by the Central team.

"Public should participate in Swachch initiatives in large numbers and help the civic body get high scores. Last year 384 people had downloaded Swacchatha app. This year, 484 people have downloaded the app. We wish 10,000 people to download the app and make use of it," he said.

Six questions needs to be answered online or through app. The MCC has initiated measures to repair all public toilets. The MCC is also planning to appoint a sanitation ambassador for the city.

He said that separate bins should be kept for maintaining dry and wet waste. If the garbage is tied in front of the house in a plastic cover, then it will not be collected by the civic workers.

"In case people fail to segregate garbage, then a fine of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 will be collected. Fines will also be imposed on those who dump garbage on vacant sites and by the roadside," the commissioner said.
