Bantwal, July 5, 2013 : Torrential rains lashing various parts of Bantwal taluk since the past three days has wreaked havoc in several places. If over 30 houses have been submerged more than 100 houses are flooded. In Kariangala two youth were washed away in the flood waters, while two others have been rescued.
It is reported that the River Netravathi is flowing above danger mark and those affected are being shifted to safer places.
The overflowing of River Netravathi has badly affected Brahmarakootlu, Farangipete and other low lying areas. Ganji Kendras have also been opened in Panemangalore and Bantwal.
The residence of former union minister and senior Congress leader B Janardhan Poojari at Bastipadpu too was flooded and Poojari’s wife and grandchildren were shifted to safer places by the fire service personnel in the morning.
What led to the floods? : One of the reasons that led to overflowing Netravathi was the release of water from the dams at Shambhur, Sarapady and Belthangady. However, a major danger was averted as the dam authorities had intimated well in advance and had even given sirens. Bantwal had witnessed floods of this magnitude nearly one and a half decades ago.
The police and fire service personnel struggled hard to shift people to safer places. The Bantwal SI Shekhar himself was in the lead in helping the people.
Bantwal MLA Ramanatha Rai, SP Abhishek Goel, Additional DC Dayanand, Bantwal Tahsildar Malleswami and others supervised the rescue operations.
