Mangalore, Dec 30, 2013 : Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily inaugurated the Petroleum Oil and Lubricant berth Number 13 at New Mangalore Port on December 29, Sunday. On this occasion, Moily also laid the foundation for Berth No. 18 for container and bulk cargo.
Speaking at a function held in this connection at the Cruise Lounge Hall of NMPT, Moily lauded the progress registered by the New Mangalore Port Trust over the past few years under the chairmanship of Dr Tamilvanan.
The Union Minister was felicitated on the occasion by Dr Tamilvanan.
TSN Murthy, Deputy Chairman of NMPT in his address, hoped that the new berth will further contribute to the progress of the port.
Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim, B Ramanatha Rai, District in-charge Minister, JR Lobo, MLA of Mangalore South and Tarun Jajoria, Director of Ministry of Shipping were present among others.
The POL Berth No. 13 is constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 73.17 crore by the contracting agency M/s DBM Geotechnics and Construction Private Limited, Mumbai.The work which had commenced on February 2, 2011, was completed on February 25, 2013 at a cost of Rs 51.69 crore. This POL berth can cater to vessels of size 1,25,000 DWT and of 280m LOA. It has a capacity of handling cargo to the tune of 57.8 million tons per annum.
Berth number 18 is designed for a vessel size of 1,25,000 DWT with a maximum LOA 280 m, beam 42 m and depth of 15.1 m. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 137.44 crore. The contract has been awarded to M/s DBM Geotechnics and Construction Private Limited, Mumbai.
