Ullal clashes- a criminal incident, not communal violence : PUCL, Komu Sauharda Vedike

Mangalore, Feb 26, 2014 : PUCL  State  President of PUCL has said that a fact finding mission of the PUCL and  Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike to Ullal in the wake of the recent  disturbances in the area, has revealed that a group of Muslim youth in the area which was taking to drugs and also resorted to drug peddling  had been harassing Mogaveera community members of the area since a month ago.

Speaking to reporters here on February 25, Tuesday, he said  what happened in Ullal was just a criminal case and it was projected as a communal clash by some groups with prejudiced motives.

 Further, he said the group of Muslim youth had been throwing stones at houses and knocking at doors though no complaint was lodged. It were these incidents which made the Mogaveera community members resort to a retaliatory measures resulting in the attack on a few Muslim youth on February 5 morning.PB D’Sa said the police had failed to check the  clashes in the area.

 Suresh Bhat Bakrabail, District President of the Komu Sauharda Vedike who also spoke, said  the police had barged into houses of Muslims in Kodi and Kotepura area and  had assaulted innocents. He said only a thorough investigation into the incidents may throw light on the facts.

PB D’Sa said  the fact finding team has not come to know of any incident wherein the police barged into the houses of Mogaveeras.

PUCL and Komu Sauharda Vedike have demanded  action against the particular Muslim group and  urged for the arrest of  the real culprits. The organisations have also demanded the release of innocents who are apprehended.
