Udupi reports first COVID-19 death; Swab samples of Maharashtra returnee tested positive after death

Udupi, May 16, 2020: Throat swab Samples of the 54-year-old man who died in Manipal Hospital have come out positive for coronavirus on May 16.

The victim was in a quarantine centre at Kundapura after returning from Maharashtra on May 13, died of cardiac arrest on Thursday at KMC, Manipal. It was the first case of COVID-19 related death in Udupi District.

According to the health officials, he was referred to the KMC hospital from Kundapur government hospital for heart related ailment two days ago. As he was in quarantine centre after returning from Maharashtra, the hospital authorities had made arrangement to treat him in an an isolation ward with all precautions.

Deputy Commissioner in a video message stated that, the funeral of the deceased will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines on cremation of those dying due to COVID-19.The 5 people who travelled with him have been quarantined. 3 medical staff who came in contact with him without safety measures have also been quarantined, said DC.

Additionally, 57 persons have been identified as being in primary contact with the deceased and 38 people have been identified as secondary contacts.
