Udupi, Oct 24, 2014: Speaking at state-level women’s sports meet organised by Udupi district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) Mission at Ajjarakadu Mahatma Gandhi district stadium, Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries Abhayachandra Jain has said that Udupi district stadium will be developed at a cost of Rs two crore.
He informed that the synthetic track in Udupi district is a model for the entire state. For the development of district stadium, Rajya Sabha member will release Rs one crore and the State government will release Rs one crore. Under MPLAD, a sum of Rs 50 lakh has already been released.
The Minister said that the State government has given Rs 25 lakh to Poovamma and Rs 15 lakh to Vikas Gowda for winning medals at Asian Games at Incheon.
The work on a fullfledged swimming pool is in progress in Udupi district. Rs 20 lakh has been released for a swimming pool in Karkala. The State government has been supporting the sports talent and the government will appoint physical education teachers.
Jain said that quality food is being supplied at all the sports residential schools in the State. The government has decided to host a national-level inter-university sports meet at Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri in January 2015. National level Rajeev Gandhi Khel Abhiyan sports meet will be held at Udupi from December 18 to 20.
District-in-Charge Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said that there is a need to support sports persons. International athlete Apsara Rohith Kateel inaugurated the sports meet. MLA Pramod Madhwaraj presided over the programme.
