Udupi Techie duo turns to goat rearing

Udupi, July 6, 2011:At a time when agriculturists are moving away from farming activities, here is a techie who has ventured into goat rearing in Udupi. Though he is a software engineer with Motorola in Chicago, he is a farmer at heart.

This is Arun Dias (38) of Kakkunje in Kallianpura who has dared to follow his heart. He pursued his education in Udupi. His father Albert Dias is a farmer who owns three to four acre farm land. After completing commerce degree in Milagres College in 1993, he completed diploma in computers. For the last 10 years, he has been living in America and working as a systems analysts in Motorola.  He has now come to his native place on one month’s leave.  The goat farm is spread around 16 acre on Perdoor Hosangadi Baje road with well-spaced sheds to accomodate the goats. The farm will be inaugurated on July 7.

“Initially, the farm will have 2,000 goats which will be increased to 5,000 gradually. There is a great demand for meat, which can be exported as well. Compared to other domestic animals, goats do not get contagious disease. At the same, time, we are also planning to sell goat milk,” says Arun. “I used to read articles related to farming whenever I visited my native place. I had interest in farming since the beginning. I went abroad to earn my living.

Now I along with my friend Rudolf D’Souza of Kallianpura have set up goat farm by investing about Rs two crore,” said Arun to Deccan Herald.

“I had plans to venture into farming after a few years. I am sure of success in my new venture. Youth should take up farming,” he said and added “farming is a profitable venture if we follow scientific methods of farming. In America, many farmers follow scientific method and have achieved success.” 

Rudolf D’Souza hails from Kakkunje. He was working in Dubai for few years as a technician.
