Udupi, Nov 29, 2016: In a rather peculiar case, Shiriyar Gram Panchayat President Jyothi staged a protest in front of the District Administration Complex here on November 29, Tuesday alleging that the Gram Panchayat members as well as the Taluk and Zilla Panchayat officials have colluded against her with the objective of displacing her.
In a letter to the President and CEO of Zilla Panchayat, Jyothi who is a Dalit, has alleged that she was harassed right since day one of her taking charge as President despite her making every effort to discharge her duties sincerely. She said the meetings of the Panchayat were not attended by members thus impeding developmental activities in the village. She also stated that already complaints have been sent to the ZP, TP and State Election Commission against members who have been abstaining from the meeting, but of no avail.
She said though she has brought the matter to the notice of Kundapur MLA Halady Srinivas Shetty, even it has not yielded any result.
She also took exception to a resolution passed in the Taluk Panchayat to dissolve the Gram Panchayat and described it as unconstitutional and an attempt to prevent a Dalit woman from continuing in office.
The GP Chief also has made a serious allegation that she was being pressurised to approve illegal works.
Jyothi who is from the Congress was elected President with the support of independents. The Panchayat has 13 members of whom five are from Congress, six are from BJP and two are independents.
