Udupi : Reckless driving claims youth’s life; locals protest

Udupi, Feb 3, 2016 :  An accident due to reckless driving which claimed the life of a youth and injured a student,  sparked tension on the National Highway at Kaup on February 2, Tuesday evening.

The deceased  youth is Preetham Shetty (23) of Kotalkatte, Kaup, while the injured girl is  Meghana  Brahmavar, a student of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru.

The mishap occurred when the Mangaluru-Kundapur   bus named Nandi Motors was speeding forth  and in the process rammed  against a stationed fish lorry.

It is said a rod at the rear of the  truck broke in the process and  hit Preetham who was in the bus. He is learnt to have died on the spot.

Locals who were furious over the reckless driving stopped all buses operating on the Udupi Mangaluru route. There was even an altercation between the protestors, bus passengers and the police. The police had to virtually struggle to bring the situation under control.

The deceased Preetham was the sole bread winner of his family ever since the death of his father a few years ago. He has left behind his mother and two sisters. He worked in a pharmacy in Mangaluru and was on way to its Udupi office when the mishap  took place.

A case has been registered by Kaup police.
