Udupi, Apr 26, 2015: Speaking at the inauguration of swimming pool at a cost of Rs 2 crore at Ajjarkadu district stadium Udupi on April 25, Saturday,Minister for Sports and Youth Empowerment Abhaychandra Jain assured to release Rs 1.31 crore to construct a tennis court at the district stadium. He said as tennis is a world game, there is a need to promote the game at higher level. Although tennis is slowly vanishing from erstwhile Dakshina Kannada district, the only organisation responsible for survival of tennis in this part of region is Brahmavar Sports Club. He also assured funds to furnish the newly inaugurated swimming pool with shelter covering the premises and lauded Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes for his contributions to promote sports in Udupi and Mangaluru.
Earlier, speaking after unveiling a plaque to inaugurate the swimming pool, Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes assured funds to promote basketball in the district, giving a boost to all sports activities. Stating that he would release funds from his MP Lad Development Funds for constructing basketball courts in all government schools, he said there is no lack of talent in India. He said sports are good for general well being and health, especially swimming would enhance physical activities that would reduce stress and obesity related diseases and make people healthy all around. .
