Udupi, June 10, 2015: The simmering differences between the Ashta Mutt seers of Udupi surfaced on June 9, Monday with Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji of Puttige Mutt taking up the initiative of renovating the ancient Anantheshwara and Chandramauleshwara Temple located close by the Udupi Mutt.
It is being said that the Puttige seer had totally sidelined the seers of the other six Mutts in taking this initiative. However, the seer said he had taken all the other swamijis into confidence and that they had no objection to the task of renovation. The Puttige seer happens to be the Chief of the Management Committee of these two temples since two decades.
Stating that the opposition was now without any reason, he stated that as the structures of the old Anantheshwara and Chandramauleshwara Temples have become weak, the renovation works have been taken up.
Meanwhile, it has been gathered that the Kaniyoor Mutt Swamiji has adopted a neutral stand by attending the meeting organised by both the sides. It is said that the rest of the Ashta Mutt seers also want equal right in the management of Anantheshwara and Chandramauleshwara Temple, but the Puttige seer was unwilling in this regard.
The Temple falls under the Hindu Religious and Endowment Department. The government has sanctioned Rs 4.5 crores towards the renovation works of this Temple which has good revenue apart from assets worth several crores of rupees.
In another development, the six seers who are opposing the renovation works have given power of attorney to a third party who has moved the court questioning the renovation works.
