Udupi, Oct 02, 2018: Udupi District in-charge minister who made a surprise visit to the District Congress Office at Brahmagiri today was in for a surprise as well, when local party workers rudely confronted her over her alleged silence on the issue of police lathi charge during the recent Bharat Bandh.
Jayamaala who had reached the venue at about 4:00 p.m. hurriedly left the venue after the embarrassing turn of events. Her party is presently observing Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. It may be recalled that during the recent Bharat Bandh called by opposition parties against Modi government at the centre, police has resorted to lathi charge against a few Congress workers in Udupi.
The same party workers who got caned turned up at the party office during Jayamaala’s visit and questioned her as to why she had kept silent and not stood by them when they were beaten up by the police. Congress workers Vishwas Amin, Manjunath Uppoor and Ramesh Kanchan were present.
Later to speaking to reporters Jayamaala said that she had enquired with the Superintendent of Police regarding the lathi charge and he had explained that the police had to resort to lathi charge in order to bring an adverse situation under control.
She also confessed that she been earlier unaware of the lathi charge against party workers and that even her visit to the party was unplanned.
Answering allegations that she is neglecting the district which is supposed to be under her watch, Jayamaala said that she had to divide her time between two portfolios, yet she was giving her maximum attention to address issues related to Udupi in Bengaluru.
