UAPA infringes upon fundamental rights of an individual, say experts

Mangalore, June 29, 2013 : The Unlawful Activities (Prevention)Act (UAPA) 2008 is a deterrent to the  basic fundamental rights  provided to citizens under Article 19 of the constitution, observed senior advocate K Purushottam Poojary.

 Participating in a symposium organised by the Social Democratic Party of India  at the  NGO Hall on the ‘draconian amendments  in the UAPA 2008, he  said every person has a right to apply for bail if arrested. But under UAPA the arrested person is denied bail for six months, he pointed out. The seminar was organised as part of the SDPI’s ten day awareness campaign against the Act.

Akbar Ali, District General Secretary of SDPI  spoke about the possibility of the police misusing the Act to harass innocents,

PK Ponnappa, High Court Advocate said there is a need to bring amendments to a law if the fundamental rights of an individual are violated while enforcing it.

Aboobakker Kulai, District President of SDPI, presided over the function. Akram Hassan SDPI State Secretary, Alphonso Franco, State Committee Member and others were present.
