Mangaluru, Nov 28, 2014: Tulu Wikipedia, which is still in process of building up and more than 600 items have been now included, Pavanaja U.B., Wikipedia representative and Programme Officer, The Centre for Internet and Society, Bengaluru, said. Speaking at a workshop on writing articles in Tulu using Kannada script, for Wikipedia at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management here on November 26, Wednesday.
In January 2014, there were 135 Tulu articles, 465 articles are included in the last 10 months. Workshops on writing articles in Tulu for Wikipedia organised in Udupi and Mangaluru had helped in adding articles, he said.
Pavananja, originally hailing from Sullia in Dakshina Kannada, said that if Tulu Wikipedia was to be kept alive, at least 50 to 60 articles would have to be uploaded per month and required at least 10 dedicated writers. If one wanted to write articles in Tulu he or she would have to type bitly.com/tuluwiki on the webpage and register themselves. Later one can write, edit or read articles written in Tulu using Kannada script.
Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy had organised the workshop preparing for the three-day Vishwa Tuluvere Parba scheduled at the college from December 12. Pavanaja informed media that both the State and Union governments should get recognition to Tulu Unicode from The Unicode Consortium, United States. This would help Tulu get global recognition.
He said that if Tulu Wikipedia was uploaded with more articles, it would help Tulu people demand inclusion of the language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which would help Tulu Unicode get recognition.
