Mangalore, July 20, 2014: Giving in to a wide cross section of public requests and protests, the one-way traffic rule along the Bendur and Balmatta roads was set back to its old pattern which prevailed a month back.  The city traffic police department effected the change  July 19.  The traffic has reversed to its previous two way pattern.

The people who voiced their grievances included many residents in the area, auto drivers, restaurant / hotel owners and customers, doctors of a prominent hospital in the area and many others submitted  a memorandum to the traffic department and to the district administration.  Corporators led by Azeez Kudroli too had submitted a memorandum demanding a review of the traffic rule. It proved that in Mangalore if public desires it can put their hands to the wheel.

Uday N Nayak, Assistant commissioner of police (traffic),  pointed out that in the first place the change was introduced  as an experiment;  but, it did not solve the problems and all concerned were unhappy, so it was decided to revert back.

It must be recalled the Mangalore traffic police had imposed a free way at Hamapankatta road, this proved a fair success. In the case of the Bendur, Balmatta roads, the one way system allowed free flow of traffic, but  inconvenienced public and commerce due to many causes. Also at least  four accidents happened, proving the one way rule defective. All are of the opinion all is well that ends well.
