Speaking about the importance of organizing interactive programmes, DC V Ponnuraj said that interactive programmes serve the purpose of interacting with the general public about the tourism industry, obtaining valuable feedback, understanding the various problems of the industry, discussing possible solutions to these problems, creating tourism awareness among the public, and finding out different ways to increase the flow of tourists into Mangalore. Pointing out that Mangalore lacks the infrastructure required for tourism development, the DC said that infrastructure must be developed as quickly as possible in order to make Mangalore a tourist centre.

In response to the tourism department officials’ complaints regarding lack of restaurants, drinking water facilities, sanitary facilities, and parking facilities at significant places such as Kadri Temple, Thousand Pillars Temple in Moodubidri, and Karkala Gomateshwara, the DC said that the government, the public, and the tourism department play a lead role in the development of infrastructure.

Informing the audience that Udupi has set up committees for each aspect of tourism such as wellness, temples, beaches, and others, the DC said that DK will also set up similar committees.

Lauding Udupi for its solid waste management system, the DC said that Mangalore also must work on bettering its waste disposal system. He also said that bio-degradable plastics must be introduced in Mangalore, adding that the MCC will introduce mechanical dirt removal systems in Mangalore to make foreign tourists feel comfortable.

The interactive programme focused on coastal and eco tourism, pilgrimage tourism, wellness tourism, cultural tourism, and others. Discussions were held on opportunities, investors’ problems, and others.

A number of travel agents, stake holders, hoteliers, resort owners, temple trustees, church trustees, mosque trustees, mall owners, local builders, and others participated in this programme and shared their views, ideas, and thoughts on how the association can take suitable measures to improve and eliminate bottlenecks in tourism operations in DK.
