Mangaluru, Oct 24, 2018: Delivering a talk on the occasion of Kittur Chennamma Jayanti observed by the district administration, department of Kannada and Culture at the Government Teachers’ Training Institute on October 23, Tuesday. Well known researcher Dr Pundikai Ganapaiah Bhat said that history is known to ignore many freedom fighters and other contributors, they are not given a due place.
Dr P G Bhat said that there is a need to observe jayantis of freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation. There are many unsung heroes in history.
Highlighting the achievement of Kittur Chennamma, Ganapaiah Bhat said that Chennamma fought against the British at a time when there was no unity among the princely states of India. This was the reason for Chennamma’s defeat during the second war against British. Kittur Chennamma is an icon of the self respect of Karnataka, he added.
MLC Ivan D’Souza advised the local administration to name any one circle in city after Kittur Chennamma. Six new circles were being planned in Mangaluru, he added.
Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura inaugurated the programme. Kannada and Culture department Assistant Director Rajesh G, Zilla Panchayat assistant secretary Gopalakrishna Bhat, Additional Superintendent of Police V K Sujit and Government Teachers’ Training Institute principal Prof Narayana Gowda were present.
