Mangalore, Feb 9, 2014:
Several traders of the Central Market tried to forcibly evacuate hundreds of street vendors, who have illegally occupied the pavements and the roads alongside the market on Sunday, February 9th. The matter went serious when two groups of the merchants and hawkers started quarrelling, which made a way for the police to enter.

The merchants claimed that despite there is ample space inside the Market, the street vendors are not ready to occupy those instead prefer to continue the business on the footpaths which is highly affecting their business as customer too prefer to buy from these road side vendors.

On the other side Mangalore west Traffic Inspector Gurudutt Kamath who had visited the site, said that despite all these claims the major issue is that vendors sitting on the roads and customers’ who buy from them is a major obstacle for the free flow of the traffic which frequently causes jams in the rounds of the market.

However the matter was brought to a still as roadside vendor cleared the place on the requests of Police. The administration is no longer interested in finding a solution despite pleas by the merchants. Repeated attempts made in the past to evict street vendors from various places have only been a futile exercise.
