Mangaluru, May 31, 2015 : The renovation works of Town Hall in Mangaluru which have been suspended half way through became a point of debate at the Mangaluru City Corporation meeting held on May 30, Saturday. BJP corporators even staged a dharna in the well of the House by shouting slogans and demanding early completion of the renovation works. The meeting had to be later adjourned following pandemonium over the issue.
Earlier, raising the issue, Opposition leader Sudhir Shetty alleged that the suspension of the renovation works has made it impossible to conduct government or private programmes at Town Hall. He said works worth upto Rs 30 lakh has only been completed as of now though the government has sanctioned Rs 99.7 lakhs to the Nirmithi Kendra for taking up the work. He said the BJP will not allow the meeting unless the party gets an assurance that the works would be completed at the earliest.
Even the issue regarding the non-sanction of mayor and deputy mayor’s funds came up for discussion. The matter was raised by former mayor Mahabala Maarla who said the Rs one crore and Rs 40 lakhs earmarked during his tenure has not been sanctioned. Later, Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati clarified that the funds have not been sanctioned as a few officials had written to the government stating that such funds were unlawful.
Finally, the matter was resolved after Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred assured to write to the Government on the issue.
Visit of US team creates uproar : Then came up the issue of the recent visit of US delegation of thee officials to discuss Smart City Project. Raising the issue, Corporator Abdul Ravoof alleged that funds have been splurged on the team’s visit and also to host a reception to it.
The Mayor assured to enquire into the issue and initiate action against officials found guilty.
Commissioner clarifies : The MCC Commissioner who issued a clarification after the meeting said the US team was accorded reception on behalf of the MCC and added that all programmes organised for the team were also attended by the Mayor and other officials.
