Mangalore, July 4, 2013: Paul Varghese, interventional cardiologist at Unity Heart Institute of Unity Health Complex in Mangalore has successfully used MGUARD, a stent with a micro-net mesh for a heart attack patient to obtain an excellent result. This is for the first time in this part of the country that this procedure was performed on a heart patient, says a press release from Unity Health Complex.
The release further said that one of the complications of using standard stents in an acute heart attack setting is that blood clots can fragment during stenting and find their way downstream to cause plugging of smaller vessels. To prevent this complication, the new MGUARD stent has a micro-net mesh on the outside of the stent which prevents clots from going down stream. Recent trial results unveiled at Paris in May 2013 showed that these stents had superior results compared to standard drug coated stents and bare metal stents in the setting of acute heart attacks, the release further added.
